Maintaining ceramic tile

Maintaining ceramic tile

0 Comments | Buffalo News, May 7, 2010 | by James

Like many of us, you’d like to have ceramic tile in your home. But perhaps you’re a little reluctant to install it because you’ve heard that grout maintenance with tile can be a pain. Or you’ve heard that tile has a tendency to crack or chip.

Grout maintenance and cracking are cause for pause when comparing tile to other water-resistant surfaces. But there are other factors that weigh heavily in favor of going with ceramic tiling.

Viewing the surface of ceramic tile through a microscope reveals very small pores. Because of its low surface porosity, dirt doesn’t cling well. This makes ceramic tile easier to clean. It is forgiving too. Because it is so hard, occasional abrasive cleaning is all right and the surface will come out shining.

When we toured residential areas and remodels in Southern Europe we discovered that tile is a symbol of status and wealth. Yes, marble was used predominantly over “wet surfaces’ on the interiors of homes. That’s because marble is cheap in Europe. However, ceramic tile patterns in solid colors and murals were prominently displayed on the exteriors of expensive homes in almost every country we visited.

For proper maintenance of the grout, be sure the proper additives are used to make it more stain resistant; Keep some for repairs later and reseal the surface every year or so. And clean regularly.

Occasionally, tiles crack. However, this is not a serious problem if you have replacements

'Destined to be on X Factor'

‘Destined to be on X Factor’

0 Comments | South Wales Evening Post, May 26, 2010 | by LAURA DAVIES

A GROUP of musical psychics are hoping X Factor success is written in the stars.

Heaven Scent, a group of four professional and trainee mediums and clairvoyants, are chanelling their spiritual powers to see if the hit reality show will pick them to sing in front of the judges in July.

They’ve already been successful in a number of auditions in front of show producers and now the quartet — made up of Emma Crowley, 25, and her mum Jane, of Alexandra Road, Loughor, along with Sue Lake, 55, of Rosewood Avenue, Baglan, Port Talbot, and Austin Charles, 28, of Falcon Drive, Cimla, Neath — are hoping for success.

Emma, who is learning to read tarot cards, said the friends only registered online for the competition within five minutes of closing.

She said: “Sue and Austin are fans of X Factor and we were all together when an alert on Facebook came up to say there was only five minutes to audition.

“We decided to form our own group called Heaven Scent.

“We had a reply saying our place had been secured and we thought if we were going to do it we had to have a reason — so we decided to audition for charity.” The group decided to support the William Aldridge Foundation — a charity set up in tribute to the soldier who was one of the youngest to be killed in Afghanistan last July.

They also decided to support charity Troops Relief and hope their X Factor experience would raise the profile of both charities.

And the group certainly made an impact when they hit the auditions at Cardiff.

The former Bishop Vaughan pupil said: “We wore khaki outfits with the charities’ logos on and took up a collection bucket.

“We got through three rounds and are now waiting to find out if we will get to the live audition and sing in front of Simon Cowell and the rest of the judges.”

The group managed to raise Pounds 60 at their audition and are now hoping they will get to the next stage on July 2. And professional medium Austin is already getting signs that they are through.

Emma said: “Austin keeps seeing images of us singing in front of Simon Cowell and he is smirking but likes us.

“He can see us going through to boot camp.

“We were destined to enter the competition and it has been a brilliant experience so far.”

A charity evening will be held at the Four Winds in Port Talbot on Tuesday at 7.30pm.

The evening of clairvoyants with Austin Charles will raise money for the William Aldridge Foundation.

It costs Pounds 7 including chicken and chips.

Emma added: “If people are lucky they may even get to see us sing our X Factor song in the interval.” .Tickets are available from the Four Winds, ATC and Psychic Beauty in West Street or by calling 07891 027 390.

Land Broker O'Donnell/Atkins Upbeat on Recent Deals

Land Broker O’Donnell/Atkins Upbeat on Recent Deals

Orange County Business Journal, Mar 10-Mar 16, 2008 by Mueller, Mark

Irvine Co. Signs Pacifica Tower Lease; Bixby Acquires Tustin Industrial Building for $18.5M

REAL ESTATE

RESIDENTIAL

O’Donnell/Atkins isn’t going anywhere, execs at the Irvine-based brokerage would like everyone to know.

The company is coming off one of its best months, closing three deals totaling more than $125 million in land sales.

Along with a 130-acre housing development deal in San Diego County, it represented the sellers for two of Orange County’s higher-end mobile parks.

The 94 residents of San Clemente’s Capistrano Shores took ownership of their mobile home park in a buy from Amherst College, with the property’s land making up about $60 million of the estimated $100 million deal.

In the second deal, Newport Beach’s Saunders Property Co. bought Huntington Shorecliffs, a 304-home complex in Huntington Beach, from longtime owners in a deal valued at more than $50 million.

It’s good news for local land brokerages, which have been looking for signs of a pickup in business, according to Tom Reimers, O’Donnell/Atkins executive vice president.

The recent deals show “there is liquidity in the market for the right assets,” Reimers said.

Buyers are starting to come out of the woodwork and the company has a few more big deals in the works, he said.

That’s a welcome sign after a tough 2007 for O’Donnell/Atkins, and land brokerages in general. After a strong 2005 and 2006, the company saw a drop in business last year, as the housing market went south and buyers and sellers remained far apart in valuations of Southern California land.

Part of the drop was due to a slowdown in business between the company and its long-time partner, Irvine-based master developer SunCal Cos. When Randy Teteak, the former president of O’Donnell/Atkins, joined SunCal in 2006, it was expected there’d be a lot more collaboration. But the opposite happened.

The slow 2007 had some in the industry whispering that the company might be on the way out, Reimers said. That’s not the case, though he expects there will be some shakeouts in the industry.

“For us, this is the time to gain market share,” he said.

O’Donnell/Atkins recently renewed its lease at its 7,100-square-foot headquarters on Von Karman Avenue. It’s also been making some promotions. Three brokers, Roland Chavez, Steve Jones and Joe Percival, were just made principals

Conflair and Harris grab the limelight

Conflair and Harris grab the limelight

0 Comments | New Straits Times, Jul 27, 2010 | by Go-Ram

THE final of the Da Ma Cai Malaysia Three-Year-Old Championship at the Perak Turf Club (PRTC) in Ipoh last weekend, lived up to its billing as one of the most popular events on the Malaysian circuit.

In a carnival-like atmosphere, the circuit’s top three-year-olds battled it out for a grand prize of RM300,000.

Four fillies, seven geldings and one colt lined up for the big event with each one of them fully earning the right to be in th race after terrific showings in the qualifying heats.

And it was one of the four fillies, Conflair, a New Zealand- bred, that outclassed her rivals to win in easy fashion with Panamanian jockey Oscar Chavez astride.

Ridden a perfect race by Chavez, Conflair was travelling in sixth position in the early running, then moved up steadily to be fourth turning for home before powering through to win from Crystal with Humble Prince third.

Conflair emulated the feat of Ishbiliya, who became the first filly to win the championship when she captured the inaugural event in 2007. Last year, it was Captain Obvious. The series was not staged in 2008 due to the ban on importation because of the Equine Influenza outbreak in Australia.

Tan Sri V. Jeyaratnam, the chairman of the PRTC said at the presentation of the championship: “It is without doubt that the Da Ma Cai Malaysia Three-Year-Old Championship series has successfully produced a number of champions of tomorrow, such as Colourland Supreme, the finalist of 2007, which went on to win the Piala Emas Sultan Selangor.

“Then Captain Obvious, who emerged the champion three-year-old of 2009, and went on to win the 2010 Astro Wah Lai Toi Sprint Trophy in Penang.”

While the focus was the big race, visiting New Zealand jockey Noel Harris proved he still has the winning touch despite being the oldest jockey to ride at the PRTC’s just concluded July meeting. Harris, 55, who failed to strike in Kuala Lumpur and Penang on his current working-holiday, top-scored with four winners

This in turn tends

This in turn tends to make the skin look dull, dry and wrinkled. Also, as a result of this, the epidermis becomes thinner and the skin becomes more fragile.

Dr. Alison Meynard, leading dermatologist at the Facial Care Center states ??the deterioration of the skin can also be attributed to some genetic influences. Some factors in natural skin aging, such as the speed of deterioration, can be determined by an individual?s genetic make up. Medical research is constantly being done to find new ways of improving the skin ageing process depending on a person?s genetic history. ?

Solar aging on the other hand, is brought about by the harsh effects of the sun. Sunlight is also a cause of significant skin damage and it is unfortunate that the results of this are not immediately noticeable.
